A Special Kind of Camping – Teen Time:

A Special Kind of Camping- Teen Time is a camp held in March of each year for those in grades 6-12, at the Brain Injury Adventure Campground. It is open to any youth who had significant loss with the last year, or who is still struggling with a previous loss. This camp is at NO COST to the participants.

Because of the time in their lives, bereaved teens tend to respond well to the peer group of support that our camp has to offer. At camp, they can connect with peers who also have lost someone they loved, and this reduces that feeling of “no one understands” and “I feel so different.” They learn healthy ways to cope with their feelings and how to remember their loved one in ways that heal, not hurt. Over the years, we have heard from adults who attended as teens, and we know that this avenue of helping teenagers through their grief works.

A Special Kind of Camping – Kids Club:

A Special Kind of Camping- Kids Club is offered in the summer for youth in grades 2-6. It is held at the Brain Injury Adventure Camp in Robards, KY. It is a half day camp for kids who have had a significant loss in their lives in the last year, or one longer than that which they still struggle with. Our camp is offered at NO COST to participants.

The nice thing about going to our camp is… they can do this! They can talk about their loss, feelings and loved one as much as they want! They can ask questions and express concerns in a safe environment where often other campers provide the answers, (with guidance from the counselors). They can leave the “grief” with the counselors and go play and “be kids.” Each camper has a “Big Buddy” who keeps them safe and is there during recreation for anything that comes up. Kids leave the camp able to talk to their families, understanding what to make of the death, and comfortable to returning to their life without guilt.

A Special Kind of Camping – Wee Camp:

A Special Kind of Camping- Wee Camp” is offered in the summer, for kids in preschool – 1st grade. It is a half day camp held at the Brain Injury Adventure Camp in Robards, Ky at NO COST to participants.

“Wee Camp” takes that development of the preschooler through first grader and uses it to help them understand what has happened and how they can deal with these new feelings called ‘grief.” Each child gets their own “Big Buddy” who stays with them through the half day, providing that consistent, steady support they need in light of their grief. Activities are geared for the shorter attention span of this age group and are grounded in play.

Adult Retreat:

Typically held in conjunction with the Wee Camp, is a special retreat for adults only. It is a half-day retreat held at the Brain Injury Adventure Camp in Robards, KY at NO COST to participants.

Adults often ignore their needs in grieving, however that doesn’t make their feelings go away. The Adult Retreat gives adults the opportunity, away from kids, jobs, etc., to appropriately grieve. We discuss coping with loss, remembering your loved one, isolation, and we share with other adults who are going through a similar experience. Adults do not have to have a wee camper or be a loved one of a St. Anthony’s Hospice patient to participate in the Adult Retreat.

For more information or to register for the “Adult Retreat,” please visit our website or contact April Heflick at (270) 826-2326.
